Pachliopta hector, সাধারণভাবে Crimson Rose নামে পরিচিত, উজ্জ্বল লাল দেহ ও কালো ডানায় সুস্পষ্ট লালচে নকশার কারণে সহজেই সবার নজর কাড়ে। দক্ষিণ এশিয়ার এই প্রজাতিটি অত্যন্ত বিষাক্ত এবং স্থিতিশীল একটি সোয়ালো-টেইল প্রজাপতি। সামনের ডানার সাদা ব্যান্ড এবং পিছনের ডানার উজ্জ্বল crimson দাগ একে অন্য সব প্রজাতি থেকে আলাদা করে তোলে। এর কোনো উপপ্রজাতি নেই, এবং এটি Troidini ট্রাইবের aposematic রোজ-গোষ্ঠীর একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ সদস্য যেখানে উজ্জ্বল রঙ শিকারীদের জন্য বিপদের সতর্ক সংকেত হিসেবে কাজ করে।

Pachliopta hector, commonly known as the Crimson Rose, is easily recognizable for its bright red body and black wings marked with vivid crimson patterns. This South Asian species is highly toxic and a well-established member of the swallowtail butterflies. The prominent white bands on the forewings and the bright crimson spots on the hindwings distinguish it from all other species. It has no subspecies, and it belongs to the aposematic rose-group of the tribe Troidini, where the striking coloration serves as a warning signal to predators.

শারীরিক বৈশিষ্ট্য (Physical Characteristics) ঃ 

Crimson Rose একটি চমৎকার কালো রঙের সোয়ালো টেইল প্রজাপতি, যার ডানায় উজ্জ্বল কনট্রাস্টযুক্ত নকশা সহজেই নজর কাড়ে। উভয় লিঙ্গের প্রজাপতির নকশা প্রায় একই হলেও মাদী (female) সাধারণত আকারে বড় এবং রঙে তুলনামূলকভাবে ম্লান। সামনের ডানায় (forewing) দুটি স্বতন্ত্র সাদা ব্যান্ড থাকে, আর পিছনের ডানায় (hindwing) দেখা যায় উজ্জ্বল লাল দাগের দুটি সারি, যার আকার প্রজাপতি ভেদে পরিবর্তিত হয়। ডানার বাইরের প্রান্তে সূক্ষ্ম খাঁজযুক্ত (serrated) বিন্যাস থাকে এবং টর্নাস (tornus) অংশটি লেজের মতো সামান্য প্রসারিত। উদর (abdomen), থোরাক্স (thorax) এবং মাথায় সর্বদা লাল দাগ দেখা যায় যা এর সতর্কসংকেতধর্মী (aposematic) রঙের অংশ। মাদী প্রজাতিতে এই লাল দাগগুলো পুরুষের তুলনায় বেশি ফ্যাকাশে ও কম স্পষ্ট।

Physical Characteristics : 

The Crimson Rose is a striking black swallowtail butterfly, easily recognized by its bold and contrasting wing patterns. Both sexes appear similar, though females are generally larger and slightly duller in coloration. The forewings feature two distinct white bands, while the hindwings display two rows of bright red spots, the size of which varies among individuals. The outer margin of the wings is finely serrated, and the tornus region is slightly elongated, forming a short tail-like extension. The abdomen, thorax, and head bear prominent red markings, which contribute to the species’ aposematic (warning) coloration. In females, these red markings tend to be paler and less sharply defined than in males.

অভ্যাস ও আচরণ (Habits & Behavior) ঃ 

Crimson Rose (Pachliopta hector) একটি আকর্ষণীয় লম্বা-লেজওয়ালা প্রজাপতি, যার উজ্জ্বল সাদা ফোরউইং ব্যান্ড সহজেই নজর কাড়ে। ফুলের প্রতি এর অনুরাগ বিশেষ উল্লেখযোগ্য, আর পর্যাপ্ত মধু গ্রহণ—বিশেষত মাদী প্রজাপতির ক্ষেত্রে ডিম উৎপাদনে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা রাখে। ভূমির কাছাকাছি এদের উড়ান ধীর ও কোমল হলেও উচ্চতায় উড়লে গতি ও শক্তি বৃদ্ধি পায়। রোদ পোহানো এদের পরিচিত আচরণ, তারা সাধারণত ১০–১৫ মিটার উচ্চতার গাছের ডালে ডানা ছড়িয়ে সূর্যালোক গ্রহণ করে। এই প্রজাতির সমষ্টিগত roosting আচরণও অত্যন্ত চিত্তাকর্ষক। সন্ধ্যার পর বহু Crimson Rose একত্রে গাছ বা ঝোপের তির্যকভাবে প্রসারিত ডালে রাত কাটায়। মাঝে মাঝে তাদের সঙ্গে Common Mormon প্রজাপতিও দেখা যায়। বিশ্রামের সময় তারা সামনের ডানা আংশিকভাবে পিছনের ডানার মাঝামাঝি পর্যন্ত ভাঁজ করে রাখে এটাই তাদের স্বতন্ত্র বিশ্রাম ভঙ্গি।

মৌসুমভেদে এদের মাইগ্রেশন লক্ষণীয়। সকালে তারা তুলনামূলকভাবে কম সক্রিয় থাকে এবং মাটির কাছের ফুলে বেশি সময় কাটায়, আর দুপুরে হয়ে ওঠে অত্যন্ত সক্রিয়। মাঝে মাঝে ছোট দলে mud-puddling আচরণও দেখা যায়, যদিও এটি খুব সাধারণ নয়।

উজ্জ্বল রঙ, ধীর স্থির উড়ান এবং দলগত চলাফেরার এই সমন্বয় Crimson Rose-কে প্রকৃতিতে এক অসাধারণ ও নজরকাড়া প্রজাপতিতে পরিণত করেছে।

Habits & Behavior

The Crimson Rose (Pachliopta hector) is an elegant long-tailed butterfly, easily recognized by its bright white forewing bands. It shows a strong preference for flowers, and adequate nectar intake—particularly in females—plays an important role in egg production. Its flight near the ground is slow, graceful, and somewhat wavering, but at higher elevations it becomes noticeably faster and more powerful.

Basking is a characteristic behavior of this species. Crimson Roses often perch on slender branches of trees, typically 10–15 meters above the ground, spreading their wings fully to absorb sunlight. Their communal roosting behavior is also remarkable: after sunset, large numbers gather on slanting branches of trees or shrubs to spend the night. They are sometimes joined by a few Common Mormons. During rest, the butterfly holds its forewings partially folded, covering the middle portion of the hindwings its distinctive resting posture.

Seasonal migration is evident in this species. They tend to be less active in the early morning, spending more time on flowers close to the ground, whereas by midday they become highly active. Small groups occasionally engage in mud-puddling, although this behavior is relatively uncommon.

The combination of vivid coloration, steady flight, and social tendencies makes the Crimson Rose one of the most striking and eye-catching butterflies in nature.

আবাসস্থল ও বিস্তার (Habitats and Distribution) ঃ 

Crimson Rose (Pachliopta hector) সাধারণত এমন উন্মুক্ত, উদ্ভিদ-সমৃদ্ধ এলাকায় বাস করতে পছন্দ করে, যেখানে ঝোপঝাড় বেশি। শুষ্ক অঞ্চলে মৌসুমের সময় এদের ঘন উপস্থিতি লক্ষ্য করা যায়। যদিও আর্দ্র, কমভূমির এলাকায় মাঝে মাঝে দেখা যায়, বড় সংখ্যায় দেখা যায় না। এ প্রজাতি শুধু খোলা মাঠ নয়, জঙ্গল—উভয় ধরনের পরিবেশেই স্বাচ্ছন্দ্যে বিচরণ করতে সক্ষম। নিম্নাঞ্চলেও সারা বছর Crimson Rose নিয়মিতভাবে পাওয়া যায়। প্রজাপতিটি বিভিন্ন আবাসস্থলে অভিযোজিত এবং পরিযায়ী প্রবৃত্তির কারণে অনেক দূর পর্যন্ত ছড়িয়ে পড়তে সক্ষম।

Habitats and Distribution

The Crimson Rose (Pachliopta hector) generally prefers open, vegetation-rich habitats, especially areas with abundant shrubs. In dry regions, their numbers increase seasonally, making them more commonly observed. Although they also occur in moist lowland areas, they are rarely seen in large numbers there. This species thrives in both open landscapes and forested environments, showing considerable ecological flexibility. Crimson Roses are found throughout the lowlands year-round, and their strong migratory tendency allows them to disperse over long distances and occupy a wide range of habitats.

এটি বাংলাদেশ সহ পাকিস্তান, ভারত, শ্রীলঙ্কা, মালদ্বীপ এবং  মিয়ানমারে দেখা পাওয়া যায়। 

Distribution : 

The species is found in Bangladesh, as well as in Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, and Myanmar.
